  • Parts I have questions on how to...........

What suggestions do you guys have towards cast Iron exhaust manifolds? Powders to use? Prime or not to prime? Blast with aluminum oxide, outgas, degrease with a prep cleaner, and coat? Anything I missed or should think about?

How about carburetors Holley for instance what is the normal procedure. Glass bead, outgas, clean, coat?

Gas tanks, oil tanks what do you guys do to prep these for coating?

Any help, ideas, or do's and don'ts would greatly be appreciated.

Well I was hoping to hear some answers on these parts actually...

I have a couple of customers who want intake manifolds done.

I also want to do the gas tank and carburetors on my VW.

I am in the same boat [SM] Juan each part I asked about I have people wanting this stuff done, as well as on my own car.

I really don't want to do a crappy job.

Any cast parts whether iron or aluminum need to be throroughly degreased, then blasted and outgassed, then either cleaned thoroughly with pre-paint solvent (non-petroleum) or acetone or blasted a second time and then cleaned depending on how dirty they start out. (Of course new parts won't always need to be degreased or even blasted for that matter)Guys on here use slightly different methods....some outgas prior to blasting, others do it after. Use whatever works for you. If you want to smooth out the casting without sanding it, a coat of primer will help with that. I recently did an Edelbrock manifold and just shot a coat of black and a coat of clear, and it came out pretty nice. Here's a pic.

I've never done gas tanks, so I'll leave that to someone else. I use pretty much the same prep steps for everything. If you use the forum search feature, most of your questions have been answered in other posts, but if you can't find the info you're looking for, be patient. Usually someone will answer your questions in a day or two.

          Best of luck.

If you would stop making me laugh all the time

I would put down a primer to minimize outgassing on any cast part...
Nothing should be between your substrate and your powder - so do whatever you must do to make this happen (pretend like I have a Russian accent).....
