  • Blast Cabinets?

Does any one have any plans for a decent sized blast cabinet? I want something big enough to do wheels in. Also, where's a good place to get masks for blasting? All the ones I could find locally said "Do not use for media blasting. (especially sand)"

Unfortunately, shipping that beast would probably suck. Besides, I am a DIY guy, so I like to do my own work (although your craftsmanship looks phenomenal!). Could you share with me, what materials you used, what parts you used and estimate on cost? I actually was looking for something a tiny bit smaller than that as well (I don't do bike frames or anything of that size). Thank you very much for the offer though.

        EDIT
Also, I already have a pressure blaster that I have been using without a cabinet (sucks losing so much media...).

How much smaller are you looking for? Have you checked out the blasting cabinets available through places like Harbor Freight?

I was actually just there on Friday. The ones they had in-store seemed like they were too small. It seemed like it would be a real PITA just to fit a 16-17" wheel in there.

You can make any size you want that you can reach with 3/4 plywood.

How big do you want it?>

I have been able to fit an 18" wheel in their 40lb cabinet... http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/d ... mber=93608

You can fit a 19x8 wheel with a small modification to the door opening...

                  Cheap solution. (Good feedback Juan)

Mine I could get ride of it for $400 with the pressure pot plus shipping

Or maybe I will blast for shops around here

That sounds like a good option... You could probably make more than $400 from that setup by blasting for people I know if you were closer we would be doing a lot more business.

I was considering buying this model not long ago when it was on sale, but wasn't sure the opening was going to be big enough for a regular cycle wheel (about 18" x 7" overall).

Is there enough room to comfortably work around a wheel that size?

                      Thanks.

Thanks for the input guys. Juan, I think I would want something bigger than that. I want to be able to maneuver, say an 18" wheel, very freely. I would like something where it is hard for me to reach the sides etc. with my hands in the gloves (if at all).

Here's my 'wheels review' on this cabinet...

15" wheels are a breeze. You can tilt, spin, rotate without any issues.

17" wheels are the biggest you can go with some sort of comfort and maneuverability. You are working right on top of the wheel and against the glass and there is very little room to rotate the wheel.

18" wheels are just a pain in the ass. If you can sandwich it in there you will find yourself opening the cabinet often to reposition the wheel and to finish some of the hard to reach areas since you're working right up against the glass.

                          Hope that helps...

                            Yes it does - thanks.

I'm going to keep looking for now, I think I would like a bit more room if I can find something that isn't too much more.
