  • Black chrome 2 woes

    Hi all,
I hope I am asking this in the appropriate area-

I have a set of polished aluminum valve covers to do, and for the life of me I cannot get this color to cure well at all-
I have stripped them 5 times now. I have outgassed them for well over an hour at 400 degrees, scrubbed with acetone , outgssed again and another acetone wipe just to polish-
I have even tried reheating anf hot flocking at high, and warm temps-
The majority of the finish is good, however on the top flat araes I get spots, almost like tiny air bubbles-

Also-shotting this powder evenly is a bummer, as there are some recesses for the bolts which don't seem to pick up the powder, getting them coated results in too thick of layer in the surrounding areas-
I have tried experimenting with powder flow and voltage--

I have never had this kind of problem before- What gives? I can shoot roseys trans black all day with no issues-but this color is a fit-

See if this thread has the answers you are looking for. Your problem sounds similar.

i just did sample pieces in black chrome2 , i admit they were only samples easy pieces but the powder coveredvery evenly and sticks to part with no problems , could the valve cover or the polishing be the problem iv e seen vc covers that nomatter how much you outgas them they still cause problems

sometimes there is not much you can do with some aluminium castings( that s for the outgasing problem )
but are the bubbles really outgasing bubbles or are they tiny pin holes caused by back ionisation ?

Hey Jon, Try using something other than the Acetone. Some have remarked that they've had problems using it. Maybe the the BC2 isn't playing nice with it. I'm not that experienced but for the recesses - maybe a simple shield with just the recesses exposed - hit 'em with powder then uncover and shoot the rest.

                Re: Black chrome 2 woes

Lose the acetone and use denatured alcohol instead or just some good old soap and water. If I was having these problems with the recessed areas I would start with the covers cold and use a propane torch and lightly heat the recessed areas one at a time and shoot them first then coat the remainder of the cover cold place it in the oven and look to make sure it is even as it starts to flow. This color does not need to be applied heavy the get the black chrome effect just make sure its even. Most times I clear this color because I apply it thin and it needs the additional gloss from the clear to look good. For the bubbles I would bet they are mostly coming from the acetone it dont play well especially with candies.
