  • Nasty wheels

I got this set of wheels that a guy told me might have "clearcoat or something" on them and wanted them done in black. They are obviously chromed cast aluminum and the chrome is flaking off all over. Mostly on the back side, but some on the face too. (You probably can't see it in the pic...I was trying to show it in the close-up) Has anyone had any luck blasting the crappy loose chrome off and got an acceptably smooth job using a primer like KL under gloss black? The guy doesn't want to spend a lot, but I'm going to have to send these to my commercial blaster. Oh, did I mention I HATE doing wheels?

      Re: Nasty wheels

      here s the probable scenario.
customer does not wnt to spend much , so because you are a nice guy you quote him a low price
then you send it to your commercial stripper who charges you the high price because he doesn t like to blast chrome
parts come back with a very heavy profile so you have to sand and then prime then sand then coat andmabe even another coat .
all that because you are the nice guy .
stop being a nice guy and start being a wiseguys
that kind of job i usually ask the customer to get his wheels stipped at the plating shop

Ya gona take forever to blast off. The BIG blaster will do it fast, but like harleydad said, gona leave a large profile.

Wise I had a similar set of rims. I told the guy right off tge bat that the finish would have "some" noticable blemishes. I just took a wire wheel to em' the flake stuff flew off, then I hit them with some 120 paper and smoothed the areas the best I could. I used wet black, and a clear coat. They came out preety nice actually, better that I and the customer expected.

I just talked to him and thats all he wants me to do too. I'll post some pics when they're done, but I'm not expecting too much. I told him I won't guarantee how the finish will come out, and that I can't warranty them in any way either. He was fine with it. Not like my OTHER customer!

So you are going to prime them ?

Thanks. Mine are starting off in much worse shape than yours, so I'm not sure how they'll turn out. And yes, definitely primer before the black.

                    Re: Nasty wheels

Well, I did one of the worst ones just to see how it would turn out. The face actually came out pretty darned good. I just took a coarse disk sander after the loose chrome on the backside, and a file to smooth bubbles on the face, then gave it a light blasting. That removed all the obvious flaking chrome and smoothed things out. Here it is after applying the KL primer.

And with the Ultra High Gloss Black.

The backs of the wheels don't look too good, but hopefully the flaking chrome is encapsulated now and won't get any worse. Turned out much better than I expected.

I'm going to go ahead and do the other three this weekend. Thanks for the input guys.

Looks good! I thought I read somewhere that you couldn't get black to shine?! :P Who cares about the back side, after a few road miles they'll be dirty anyway!

I think I've got this Wagner cup gun figured out finally. It took a bit of trial and error since the manual is basically geared for a hopper/box feed unit. Getting the powder to flow right without getting a faceful out of the cup vent took awhile to figure out. We'll see if I can repeat it again tomorrow!

This Wagner is the bomb. First coat was applied at 80 kv and the second coat at 50 kv. No need to turn this one way down for second coats to stick. The cloud is so nice and soft it's unreal. One of your hoppers would probably kick a$$ with this gun too, BeeBob!

I hate to tell you this, but I don't think you can turn the Wag cup gun into a hopper user...
