  • Price check

The local welding shop has a semi rush order for 50 new steel flat plates ( with holes for hanging ) 12" x 10" x 3/16 thick in matt black. Two batches of 25 and 2 days to do them. I'm thinking a light blast, PBTP "one step" spray down and shoot. I said $4 each, too high too low? Thanks

That only works out to $12.50 an hour for your 2 days of work, not counting blasting, chemical, powder, and oven expense. Sounds a bit on the cheap side to me.

Ya I said $5 first, but he under bid the job just to get, so I'm trying help him out. The "King" says blasting is not really needed, just the one step and pc.

Without blasting will help. You should be able to rack, treat, and shoot 25 of those in half a day easily. Since it's a rush job though, your price should even be higher than Harleydad's estimate, which sounds much closer to reality by the way. Remember you're doing both sides too.

        Best of luck.

A new "price" for those plates! We're going to do the "exchange services" special. I do the coating and he makes me a stainless steel stripping tank with a lock down lid, drain, wheels and maybe some "holey tubing" for the Duke bubble maker AND a nice big expanded grate for it and my bigger blast cabinet floor! I think that'll be a fair trade!

Trying to get a handle on the pricing thing.
Using the parts size and figuring Sqft I come up with 1.73 of surface area,(I think). $6.50 works out to $4.75 per sqft.

Is this about how you figure it?

                Bartering's the way to go!

I've been trying to do a lot of it lately. So far I've gotten free pizzas, my website designed (still under construction), All of my vendor booth signs, and car vinyl signs made. Those would easliy have been 2 grand for the vinyl signs. All I have to do is a couple boxes of parts somewhere down the road for him... I hope he forgets, but a deals a deal.

I've been using craigslist with great sucess for barter services.

Now I'm trying to locate a laptop for PC services.

The surface area is correct. There are more things that go into it. Prep time, racking time,pre-treatment time, application time, oven time,packing/assembly time and shipping costs if the parts have to ship.
Realizing there are other things to consider. How much of the 4.75 would be the cost per sqft?

Bring to mind a question. Reading the artical on page 43 in CC about pricing.
Have you actually tried using the formulas that they suggest? How does it work out for a small shop without all the overhead, expeses, automation, etc.

                    Re: Price check

You orginally said that you would charge 6.40 a piece for that size.
Using the sqft surface area that comes out to 4.75 sqft. I guess what I'm asking is 4.75 what you would use per sqft for that type piece and then add to that the other cost?
