  • Re-do advice please!

Remember that first set of wheels? The 19 inchers aluminum cast from hell in mirror black? The ones I did a week before I bought an IR gun so I had to guesstimate on the cure? Well it turns out a couple of them were under cured!

The two front wheels have TINY chips in them (1 each, on side of spoke). I have 2lbs of Mirror Black available and looking for advice on how to tackle this issue. Any way to repair this? I'm guessing not. but I gotta ask.

How should I go about getting this taken care? Thanks!

Here's what I would do. First of all, take the 2 that don't have chips yet and run them through another full cure cycle to be sure they don't end up chipped as well. The other two, you should be able to clean up real well, lightly scuff with scotchbrite or fine sandpaper (220 grit should be fine) feathering the chips without getting too carried away, blow off well with compressed air, preheat and go right over them. They should be fine. Just don't undercure them again!

    Best of luck.

I carry a gun because I'm too young to die, and too old to take an ass-whoopin'!

      Thanks Dan!

I was thinking about curing the two good ones again, but I'm afraid I won't be able to get them clean enough and just end up baking dirt and grease into them. Any suggestions on how to get them cleaned up well?

The two bad ones I was planning on going over with some 400 grit paper and just smooth out the chips. Am I basically just treating this like another coat?

I'll make sure they are fully cured this time. I've finally gotten used to the oven and with the help of the IR gun things are a lot better than a few months ago

The two good ones should clean up well enough with just water and mild detergent. If you're really concerned, go over them with a rag dampened with rubbing alcohol like you were prepping for clear coat, nothing stronger. The powder has already hardened, so nothing is going to bake into them at this point. They should still be fine. The ones you're re-doing, yes...treat them just like you're doing a second coat.

I use the Liquid 2 powder stuff. I've had good lucking using it for chips & stuff. If would save you from having to do the hole rim again. You can sand & polish it so you can't even tells it's there. I've also read where people use MEK to mix up a bit to do touch up.
