  • Grandsons wagon HELP!!!

Okay I know you guys have talked about this and I hope for my sake you will do it again. I am having problems with starburst popping up while shooting the shimmer candy blue metallic (tgic) over the Chrome. I double check my grounds before I started with a DVOM and used a new hook for hanging the wagon. After failing in two attempts. I blew off the wagon heated it to 150 and still the same problems. They show up while trying to get the inner edges of the wagon coated. Faraday effect is killing me there. I have tried different voltage settings starting out around fifty. Also more air and two different gun tips. Hopefully someone will have some ideas or maybe you're bored and you can drown me in a bucket.
Also for a good laugh after cleaning off a pound of blue powder I look like a smurf.
You will notice in one of the pics a line of sorts this is where I blew off a section to try something else. As you can see it too failed.

    Thanks in advance to everyone.

    Re: Grandsons wagon HELP!!!

First off, Papa Smurf...what gun are you using? On items like that give you starbursting problems, it's very important that along with a clean ground, you lower your voltage as low as you possibly can and still get powder attraction. Keeping the gun at least 12 inches or more from the part helps too. When I'm getting that back-ionization, I actually back off as much as 2 feet. You end up with more wasted powder, but it does minimize the problem. A tip from Harleydad...try to get complete coverage in one pass by moving the gun slower instead of going back over several times. Each pass builds up more of a surface charge that tends to repel the powder. Once you get startburts, if you blow the powder off, that also builds up a static charge which will make the problem worse when you try to re-coat unless you dissapate the charge by wiping it down with a damp cloth or heating in your oven for 10 minutes or more. Take it up to cure temp for 10 minutes, then take it out and let it cool down again. You should be good to go. There, I'm tired of typing now! I don't know how Duke does it! Where is he lately anyhow?

I do believe his area is taking a "tropical bath"! Hope everything is okay Duke!

Thanks wiseguyz, the problem I get when I back away from the part is it will not coat the inside edge or wall. I am using the King Coat Gun. I don't know if this helps but It's like coating the inside of a bucket.

Have you tried doing the hardest areas first...warm or cold? Try that lip first with one good steady pass.

Good suggestion, Beebob. I forgot to mention that I always do the recessed areas first.

                Re: Grandsons wagon HELP!!!

Thats where I'm stuck. I am starting with the recessed area first trying to get the inner wall edge covered. By the time I get powder on it the starburst are apearing on the lip.

BeeBob I tried room temp and 150* still same problem. This is weird. I know sooner or later I would run into this. I was hoping for later.

HarleyDad did we do a little jug-a-lug last night? Fun but don't ya hate the next day? I always get up early no matter what time I go to bed and get coffee then run until it's gone!!

I appreciate you guys helping me, Thanks. Goin to try again later.

If you're getting the bursts that fast, you'll need to lower the KV for sure and poss stay a little farther back when shooting.

With the wagon hanging if I'm to far away I get faraday so bad where the inside wall meets the floor I actually get a half inch area that won't take powder. Looks like a chrome strip around the edge. I think some of the problem might be the powder. Seems heavy, I think since it's a metallic. Just doesn't seem as fine as what I'm use too. Going to try again today.

A good friends birthday bash, I think it was all the Jagerbombs. I feel better now. Fire in the backyard tonight, I'm ready to start again.

How's the wagon coming along? Do you have the part hanging on a swivel so you can rotate it. What tip are you spraying with?
Damm I miss all the good times. The fire in the back sounds like it's going to be a fun relaxing time. My kind of drinking time. We went out last night first in awhile, been slow at work, no extra. Oh well.

Yes I have the wagon hanging from a swivel. I started using the conical tip that was installed in the King Coat gun from the begining. Then I tried the fan tip. With it I could get powder to the edges, but the starburst would appear. Today I'm going to try a different gun and go back through my grounds to make sure I didn't miss something. I am thinking this powder might be to heavy for the suction type cup. The Caswell gun has air injected into the cup kind of on the same lines as a hopper gun. I'm thinking this will help to move the powder better and then I can move back some reducing the chance of a starburst problem. What do ya think?

Harley, I was thinking you said you had a craftsman gun also........if so you might want to try that, it does very well in the low voltage/amperage applications.

Thanks Slowride. I might. I'm not having good luck with the caswell gun. I wonder does anyone or you know can a powder be to thick to move. This powder (sorry King) is from CC. Sparkle Candy Blue I turned the air pressure way up and had the kv on the lowest setting on the caswell gun (30kv) and still the powder barely flowed out of the gun well. The chrome laid on nicely and I had no problems. I am recuring the wagon to get rid of the charge and then again I'm going at it.

Try sifting it or in the hopper and fluidize it for awhile. May be moisture.
You guys are going to end up haten me. I have sifted it and fluidized it in the BeeBob Hopper (awesome hopper) I think I left it in the hopper for fifteen minutes. I store my powder in a cabinet in a diffferent area from my spraying. It's air conditioned and I also have a dehumidifier. Well I added gas to my fire. In a hurry to recure the wagon so I can try again after refiling the hole where my hook goes to insure a better ground I cured the wagon at 400 instead of 375. Oops the chrome didn't like that. Now I have to sand the chrome and redo it. Then I get to play with the blue again. After all the colors I have sprayed I am definitely getting my a$$ beat this time.
