Would just like to know what you guys do when coating in used cases. I was wondering about the bushings on the inside. I know that ones that go through can bleed oil back at your powder and if it were me I would want to replace those any way. The cases he wants done or 90's sportster. Do you do them at maybe a lower temp than 400?

I also will have to repair some small dents in his gas tank. I can paint it so that would be no problem but I would like to know what you guys do on say used gas and oil tanks if you are going to coat them. Or is it not advisable to do them? I know if a sealer has been used in the tank that heat can mess that up. What advice do you have?

    Thanks

For the small dents Tiger has a good epoxy repair kit...

those cases should not be a problem , but wich bushings are you refering to .i don t have a sportster case in front of me
but as far as i remember all the areas where there are bushings are areas that will be masked anyway.
please correct me if i m wrong , and also if you clean and out gas the part you should not have any oil coming out of there

Most all are inside the case so no problem. My 80's case just has the one bushing from outside in for the shift linkage so that one would be the only bleeder of any old oil that I can see. So looks like all is fine. What I was wondering is that some bushings are the oil impregnated ones and the baking can start to cook it out. And there is some newer type ones that are I think Teflon impregnated and those will make a mess in a heart beat. Found that out with some back sets I did a while back. What a mess.

Duke if you're still in doubt about something seeping out during the cure, try to hang/lay the case so any dribbles won't go on the powder.

I can also press the old one out and then he can give me a new one to press in and he will have everything back to spec for any out side leakage.

Now is any one going to answer the GAS tank question? Or do I find another forum to ask for an answer? Or did no one read past the cases question

If there is a sealer in the tank, I'd turn it down. If not, clean inside (to remove fumes) as you would a gas tank that you're going to weld on. Other than that treat it like any other part. Dent repair, use what works for you i.e Tiger's epo strong, lab metal, all metal, jb weld, whatever.
What do you do to remove the fumes?

Don't feel bad I ask this in a topic I posted along time ago.

Run a hose from your cars exhaust into the tank and let the car idle for awhile. Other folks have different methods I'm sure.[/quote]

I would say collect all you can in a glass jar and send to Foxworthy because you have to share with people Like my son ask me" did you do something when you were here?" I said I told you you I needed to go to the bath room and he said " Gee thanks and both dogs run out the door just after you left" And I said " got to share the good ones"

Funny how the gas tank thing come up. Just dropped one off yesterday to get the good ole coating done. Know the guy that runs it and asked him how hot he does the tanks. He said that he bakes the coating at 350 deg. So I figure that I can turn down my oven and bake a bit longer then at 400.

Also agree with the car exhaust into the tank. It will get rid of all fumes. I have done this for a long time and weld the tanks right after I have done this. It works fine. I'm still here.

Do you do any washing out of the tank and then use the exhaust to finish getting out the fumes? If you have done any on a bike tanks what do you use to get the exhaust into them? They have a small hole.

Couldn't you just make a pipe to use small enough like 1 3/4" or 1 7/8" to go into the tank and adapt it up to your tail pipe?
Or like HD said use a hose obviously one that would take the heat.

How long does it take before the fumes are gone?
