  • Describe your shop!

Well I wanted to create a poll so members could chose what kind of category their shop falls into, but that's not an option.

I think a thread like this will give PBTP a little bit more background information on some of our members and help improve the already amazing customer service.

I'm also curious to see how many others are doing this out of their homes and the challenges they are dealing with, as well as those who started the same way and have moved on to bigger shops. I think it would be interesting to see how others got started, where we all are now, and what the plans are for the future.

Small Home Shop - 1 to 3 car garage usually between 200 and 600 square feet.

Medium Home Shop - Usually detached shop with 600+ square feet available.

Large Commercial Shop - Full-time powder coaters that lease or own large commercial space.

We have a very diverse group in here, and it's very interesting to hear about the small coaters and their never ending innovating solutions to make ends meet, and the big dogs with all the fancy toys!

Feel free to share pictures of your previous shops and current setups as well as any stories you may have. Thanks!

    Re: Describe your shop!

    Detached oversized 2.5 garage.

Double oven converted to a larger single oven.
    Standalone blast cabinet
Ingersoll rand 2 stage 60 gallon compressor

Challenges - getting work!!! cold MN winters, and everything taking longer and more money than planned. Mostly i need practice and I can't even get practice parts...

Need a better prep station because I got parts all over hell and back, not efficient at all.

I would call it a shed more than a shop.

              Re: Describe your shop!

Mine is a separate bldg 22'x30' ( USED to be the truck garage, but now it's sits under the carport ) with an attached 14'x20' wood shop that's used for sandblasting, all plumbed with 3/4 galv pipe. Kitchen stove for small stuff and a 4x4x6 bigger oven. I use a spray room vented outside with rolling racks to the ovens. It's nice to be able to "walk" to work and the neighbors aren't complaining...YET!!.

Oversized shop that is close to 8000 sq ft, basic booth, oven is always too small, couple blasters, couple parts washers, two offices and not enough work

                  Re: Describe your shop!

25' x 50' shop with 25' x 10' finished office with 4'x4'x2' benchtop booth with 3-stage filtration, so not vented outside (yet). Ted's Fabrication 4'w x 4'd x 7' high oven, 30"w x 22"h x 26d" convection oven, HF blast cabinet with 80-lb pressure pot in place of the siphon gun, 5hp/60 gallon Campbell-Hausfield compressor, piped in 1/2" black pipe around work area, Wagner cup gun, EW Pro Gun, and ebay chinese cup gun. I have enough room, still looking for more work so I can quit my day job. It is starting to snowball though. A side note on the oven. Although the big one is much larger than my convection oven, I have used it almost exclusively since I bought it several months ago. The big one is single-phase, the little one is 3-phase, and I honestly have not used the smaller oven more than twice since I bought the big one from Ted. It doesn't radiate any more heat than the small one did, it hasn't changed my electric bill at all (and I've been doing a lot more work lately), and it is so convenient that I just don't care to use the little one. Just something to consider if you're looking to upgrade your oven.

Single car garage. No heat. No air. 4'w X 7'h spray booth, 80 gal Eaton compressor, HF blast cabinet and hobby gun. Using an ancient kitchen oven but I'm looking for a better one to knock up.

I'm working out of a 20x20 garage. 60 gallon 240v air compressor. HF blasting cabinet. 30" electrical oven with a higher metal base. Currently working on 6x4x3 oven and corresponding booth. It's small but it's a start and gets the job done.

UMM, SMALL, no car shed. I am 12'x14' with my oven build outside 1 wall. 7'l6'h5'w is oven interior, 18Kw, and door is on the 12' wall. Ya its freakin TIGHT, and can be a pain to clean, but it works so far

                            Re: Describe your shop!

I am fortunate enought to have found a house outside the city limits with no restrictions, with a 2 story 8 car garage. All concrete block on the lower level and barn style roof on top level. One end I use for powdercoating approximately 800 sq ft. 1 house hold oven, one 3X3X4 oven by Ted, 60 gal continous duty air compressor, 1 small blast cabinet, one pressure pot blaster, no heat and air at this time in the powdercoating room. (I know I am in Alabama why do I need heat answer is I have lived here all my life. I have become adjusted to the heat and I don't like cold at all as a matter of fact I feel sorry for Dan but better you than me up there). I have a wood burning heater in the other end of the garage, but it doesn't do a thing for the powder room. I have 1 propane heater and 2 kerosene heaters to knock the chill off. I do have a window ac unit now but hasn't been installed yet do to lack of room in the breaker box. I have to get a new box to accept more breakers first.

My shop is 600sq. ft. I have a husky 80 gallon compressor, Hotcoat gun, regular old yellow oven, plasma cam with a thermal dynamics cutmaster 51, millermatic 175 welder and lots of tools. I do ornamental iron work to custom gates. I just wired in my oven and put in a thermometer to make sure the temp. is right on today and it is. Still need a blast cabinet and bigger oven.
