Ok all, our NEW c4 Came in today...thanks to shelly !!!!! (Boy that manual is big...)A few questions for all and anyone who knows. The gun states that you have to ground the entire spray booth, opposed to the work piece. My hobby gun you are suppose to just ground the piece. Is this true or what. Am I to believe that I need to electrify my entire booth? And what about discarge after you are done spraying, do I need to touch the part to discharge or is it automaticaly done. Funny for all the info they give you, they are not very clear about these points. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks All...

I have the cup gun and this is what I do. I have a metal poll where I hang all of my parts. The metal poll has my ground clip on it. No need to discharge the gun.

basically I can just clip the ground to the part....I guess.. What about grounding your pole. Is it electrically grounded, they said something out grounding the whole booth.

TNC sometimes didnt even use the ground!

I just hook it to my poll and the poll is supported by 2X4's that are wood. No other grounding. I am sure everyone does it a different way. lol

Look on page 13 of the instruction sheet, it has pics of what should be grounded. Control unit to the booth, booth to an "in ground, ground" and also ground your part ( small print near the bottom ). Hope that helps...

yeah I saw the page but it seems like an awful lot of "grounding".LOL If I ground the entire booth and my part, and ground the booth to a grounding rod or something of that nature, then I pull powder to everything, Right? I mean I have an electrified booth covered in powder, probably along with the ground rod also, I would think, right. Oh yeah 1 more. What about proper shoes. Do I need special soled shoes? The said rubber is no good.

Some powder will stick to the booth, but the majority should stick to the part, cause hopefully that's where you're aiming the gun! When cleaning up or color changing, blow out your booth or eventually the powder will stick and be harder to get off later. The grounding rod will mostly be in the ground with a heavy gauge wire/clip going to the booth. I've asked about shoes and was told "high heels might work"! Actually all I've ever worn is tennies and have never been shocked from wearing them. Fire that motha up and lets see some pics!

I finally got to set up and play with my new Wagner box feeder....NICE!
Of course I had to try COLD 2nd coats as the first test...To be fair I tried my EW pro gun first...NOT, partial coverage only. Then I tried the box feed. I had 2 pieces with CC mirror black on them already scuffed and ready to coat. The first covered great on the preset setting for 2nd coats. The 2nd didn't want to coat, so I turned the kv down and the amps up...worked great.
Then I tried 2nds with EW "metallic" gold. Thus the reason for this quote...The 2nds on the gold didn't work no matter what I did. So I called and talked to James. Very helpful, seems I had the grounding set up wrong and it's very obvious when doing metallics.
I had the earth ground correct ( in ground rod going to the spray booth/frame ), but I had the control box ground going to the PART NOT the frame or booth. James says to connect the control box ground to the earth ground ( booth or frame ) NOT the part! I'll be trying the "correct" ground shortly and post results later.

                            Re: The NEW C4 Hicoat

The main thing you need to know is if you have continuity between what you are trying to spray and your ground connection you are good to go. A crude way to check this is get a multimeter, set it to ohms and check for conductivity the same way you would check a fuse to see if it is good. The proper way to check ground is to use a megaohm meter. This meter actually sends a small amount of current through the circuit and measures the resistance in megaohms. Industry standards state that any reading greater than 1 megaohm is considered inadequate ground.

doc...when you say "ground connection' in the last post, are you refering to earth ground, (like ground rod) or the ground from the control box. When I coated the rims wet black, I had my booth grounded to earth ground via a 4 gauge wire, (quite large, but thats all I had) then I had my rim hanging outside the booth, (this made spraying the rim easier) and then I clipped the control box ground to the rim, then I had another wire from the rim to the booth. This seemed to pull the powder pretty well, infact no problem at all. I was also able to apply a second clear coat on them with the controller on 2X. All with no prob.
