  • IRON PHOSPHATE

Ok, Who uses it, how often and is it necessary? I'm cautious about buying since it's so pricey. I would need/want a no rinse cause my shop doesn't have water. Is it a necessity or is there an alternative. I understand it prevents flash rust but does it provide any long term benefits?
    Thanks~

Thanks - great info. Is it a necessity though? Is the "no Rinse" version idiot proof? I would probably wipe or spray on - then what? Do you just wipe it off or let it air dry?

Are there any cheaper alternatives I could could get by with for a while?

I know - stop asking questions already.....

      Re: IRON PHOSPHATE

I use the onestep because of the hard water I have here and the extra protection that was mentioned. At 2 1/2 oz per gallon of water, it was still a little weak. After talking to Donald,I tried 4 oz per gallon and it works pretty good. I can wash down parts, rinse, then soak it down with the onestep out of a 1 gal bug spray bottle, lightly blow off excess and dry it in the oven. This HD frame was done that way several hours before this pic was taken and it turned out good, with NO FLASH RUST!

If I get you right you go from washing, to rinsing, right to phosphate. No drying in between?
Also doesn't phosphate help in adhesion of the powder coat?

Yes to all of the above! It seemed to work better if the part was still wet from the water rinse. DO dry completely before powder coating though. The frame was the 2nd time I used the stuff. The other time was for those 52 steel plates in matte black and the powder went to them like a freaking magnet!

I use a phosphate cleaner with a low PH on all my parts, We use a 3 stage wash sytem wash, fresh water rinse, and a sealer final rinse with a rinse aid concentrate.

What are you using for a wash? Soap and water? Like Dawn?

If the part is greasy, simple green mixture. If just minor dirt, Dawn grease cutting dish soap and water rinse.

Do you mix the no-rinse with water too or is it used full strength?

The package says 2 1/2 oz of no-rinse per gallon of water. After talking to Donald, we bumped up the mixture to "full strength" of 4 oz per gallon of water.

The Surcoat 915 is a phoshate cleaner...here's the deal:

In the manufacturing plants they usually will use a 3 stage washer, or a 5 stage, which would be alkaline wash(heated) rinse (unheated), Phosphate (heated), Rinse (unheated) and Seal ! Now there is also the 7 stage system or lets talk Zinc !! and E-coat !
