  • Ground question

For those that have ground rods - what type/guage wire do you have running to it? I have the rod in but haven't gotten around to hooking it up. Is just a bare #8 or so wire good enough?

    Re: Ground question

My ground rod is 8 foot long and 5/8 thick, I used #4 solid copper wire.

When I installed the new service to my garage the City code was for two 5/8" ground rods.

#8 would be fine. The ground lead on most non-commercial controllers looks like #10 or smaller. I have #4 on my ground rod but only because I had some laying around.

I'm grounded on the inside of the electrical box which I was told has a 10' 1/2" rod going into the ground..

            Everything works fine.

I think the grounding in my shop is pretty good already. I can do 3 cold coats with my HF gun with little problem. This would be good insurance.

The best ground is copper water pipe coming into the building from the street or rebar encased in concrete (20' or more). A #8 ground wire is sufficient . If your ground rod goes into soft ground easily (by hand) or with little force it prob. wont be very effective.

Picked up the #4 today. I put the rod in a while back but never got around to hooking it up. 8' 5/8" copper. I still can't belive I got it all the way in w/o hitting a rock. I didn't go in easy. Easy doesn't happen to me.

I have a 8' x5/8" rod also and #4 gauge wire that attaches to my spraying cable.
