Here's the 2 tone cast alum job I have to do. The raised flames will be mirror black and the rest will be flat black. The flat black takes 20 @ 400 and the mirror 10 @ 400. I'm thinking flat first, then cure for @15 min, out to cool, mask off and shoot the mirror black. Pull part in @ 2 minutes, cool and remove tape and back in for a full cure? Suggestions??
I thought I'd try the Og flat black first, but after 2 solid coats I'm going to strip tomorrow. Too many pits and rough edges I didn't see. Next KL primer, sand, flat and mirror. I don't have any flat clear, does sound like a good idea. I might try all flat black then gloss clear the flames...we'll see.
I would coat the mirror black first, then the flat. That way, when coating the flat black you can just touch the edge of the masking so there won't be a heavy build-up of powder on the masking. Because when you go to remove the masking, it could chip with thick build-up. Also when coating the flat black turn the charge down to where the powder just starts to stick, because the powder won't stick to the masking, making removal very easy.
I have tried the flat clear coat masking, works great if you want to keep the same base color. Base color, clear coat, masking and flat clear coat.
I thought I'd play around with this for future ideas. I wanted to see how the "brushed alum" would look next to the flat. I'll do the gloss black tomorrow and blend in the edge lines.
