Hello everyone, my name is David I'm pretty much a newbie. I've done lots of small single stage stuff, but decided to try and do a set of wheels that I have had laying around. First I will tell you what I'm working with. I have a 50 kv Caswell cup gun and a 4 x 6 x 4 electric oven. The first thing I did was chemically strip the wheels (which are aluminum, BTW) after which I soda blasted them and pressure washed followed by denatured alcohol. I wanted to do a 2 color scheme with clear over it. So....... I started w/ PBTP mirror black. It went on very nice. I masked off what I needed to and did the "inserts of the wheels in PBTP Bonded silver sparkle. Again it went on great and came out looking good. So then came the problem. I have PBTP super durable high gloss clear to go over all of it. When I coated the wheel w/ the clear (before cure) I thought I had a descent looking coat over it, but after 10 min. at 400 PM temp it looked like fidos behind. It wasn't glossy at all in fact it looked like a really badly orange peeled matt finish, if that makes any sense. So I guess my question is there secret to doing clear correctly ? I think I shot the clear @ 35 KV, but I wasn't sure how "thick" to lay it on and again what went on seemed to look good before it went in the oven. I'm confident in my prep as nothing touched the wheels other than denatured alcohol. I don't want to screw up the other 3 so any help would be appreciated. Thanks, David

Re: FNG w a question or two
yea HD it's on the whole wheel. I shot it a good 15 min after alcohol. I will get a pic up tomorrow. I've been reading about back ionization also. I'm thinking I could have a combo of problems. Hobby gun and inexperience being the primary two.Comment

Re: FNG w a question or two
OP can be created by too heavy of a coating or too thin....Gloss is affected by overbake or underbaking the part.....my advice for all new coaters is to use the Glass Clear....over your metallics ...

and the SD Clear over standard colorsComment
