A guy came by with a primary case and both stock chrome pipes off a BMW motorcycle. He insists that I coat them black and with the satin clear I used on on other parts of his bike. Will this hold up? They look really baffled inside and the chrome looks like I could just scuff and shoot with powder. Has anyone done this before?

I did these awhile back and he says they are still holding up. Make sure where the muffler mounts to the pipe it's good and tight so no direct exhaust leaks onto the pc. The red tips and shields are also holding up. I'm with HD, I would NOT clear coat.

Originally posted by HarleydadThey look like they have some rust issues, I don't think you'll be able to scuff and coat. That rust needs to be removed by whatever means (blasting, etc...........) and I suspect you may have some loose flaking chrome. Try putting them through an outgas cycle (450 degrees for an hour or so) to see if the chrome bubbles/blisters. If so, that all needs to removed.
Personally, I would not guarantee anything unless the chrome is stripped.

Re: Has anyone used regular powder on Motorcycle Exhausts?
Here's the end product. The guy came back to the shop and changed his mind. He had me coat with wrinkle black to cover imperfections better. I think they look great compared to what they looked like when they were brought in. Next question is what should I charge? I had to blast chrome off but it's just a good heavy single coat.

Are you coating just a can (muffler) or the whole exhaust? Is it the actual pipes or heat shields?
Is this a gloss black with a satin clear? I suspect the clear would most likely yellow with time.
You could check into one of the high temp powders to see how close it is to what you've coated already.

The nameplate on the one I posted held up fine. I warned the owner that it might not and he was o.k with that. To my surprise it held up.
Something told me it should but I thought I better ask any way.
Have a good one
Duke
