  • Has anyone used regular powder on Motorcycle Exhausts?

A guy came by with a primary case and both stock chrome pipes off a BMW motorcycle. He insists that I coat them black and with the satin clear I used on on other parts of his bike. Will this hold up? They look really baffled inside and the chrome looks like I could just scuff and shoot with powder. Has anyone done this before?

Here's what one looks like. He's had me coat other parts on the motorcycle with chassis black and then the satin clearcoat. I guess this is just the muffler?[attachment=0]S4200021.JPG

I did these awhile back and he says they are still holding up. Make sure where the muffler mounts to the pipe it's good and tight so no direct exhaust leaks onto the pc. The red tips and shields are also holding up. I'm with HD, I would NOT clear coat.

That rust needs to be removed by whatever means (blasting, etc...........) and I suspect you may have some loose flaking chrome. Try putting them through an outgas cycle (450 degrees for an hour or so) to see if the chrome bubbles/blisters. If so, that all needs to removed.
Personally, I would not guarantee anything unless the chrome is stripped.
Yep, that chrome has got to go. And yes, any regular powder will be fine that far back. But why the satin clear over a gloss color? Doesn't that kinda defeat the purpose of the gloss?

I did the aluminum tips on my V&H mufflers with a regular gloss black. The chrome was messed up on one of them, so I blasted them and coated. Have about 2000 miles on it since, and still looks good.

I'll outgas and then blast the chrome off . The black I used before was the chassis black that doesn't have much shine. I'm not sure why but he was pretty insistent on using the satin clear. I tried to tell him it might not work with the clear. I'm afraid the clear won't take the heat like the higher cure powders. This guys kind of eccentric. He's got two BMW motorcycles, an nice old Mercedes and surprisingly driving a mini van this afternoon. Well, anyways, thanks for the help. I'll see how it goes.

I have dont exhaust on a bike for a friend, texture black, believe it or not it looks pretty good on his bike. These are some of the first parts I did 7 or 8 months ago and they are holding up fine.

Here's the end product. The guy came back to the shop and changed his mind. He had me coat with wrinkle black to cover imperfections better. I think they look great compared to what they looked like when they were brought in. Next question is what should I charge? I had to blast chrome off but it's just a good heavy single coat.

Maybe I missed it, but what kind of wrinkle black is that?

Actually, it's Pendry Powder Coating Wrinkle Black. They've been in the business for years and have a job shop and a conveyer/manufacturer type business. They still sell some powders on Ebay. They helped with the Biker Buildoff a few years ago. I don't remember the details. George was helpful towards me getting started. He is one of those "call me any time" guys.

                        You mean like this?

Are you coating just a can (muffler) or the whole exhaust? Is it the actual pipes or heat shields?

Is this a gloss black with a satin clear? I suspect the clear would most likely yellow with time.

You could check into one of the high temp powders to see how close it is to what you've coated already.
On the can (muffler) The name plate. Will it take the heat if you leave it on or do you drill out the pop rivets and then install them? I have one to do soon by the same company and thought now is a good time to ask. The one I will be doing is about 1"x3"

Hey Duke! Looks like it's a factory muffler with what had been chrome on the outside. I just coated the muffler and some guards that protects you from getting burnt if you get to close to the pipes. This is just wrinkle black polyester powder coating. It looks like in other threads that it holds up if it's further back on the system.

                            Thanks,
Something told me it should but I thought I better ask any way.
