• Dad's Clock

This is a clock that was in my Grandfathers garage for many years. I brought it home when I was a teenager with the intention of getting it working. My Dad started working on it a year ago and got it working. The light comes on and the second hand disk spins. But he got to the point he couldn't work on things anymore. Well now it is up to me again, I plan on finishing it in his memory.

My question is what black to use? A flat or wrinkle? the front looks like it might have been flat but the back looks like it may have been a wrinkle or hammer tone. Hopefully the pics will show enough.DSC_0263.JPG[/attachment:2so6vcc8]DSC_0268.JPG[/attachment:2so6vcc8]DSC_0266.JPG[/attachment:2so6vcc8]

All indications are that they are no longer in Business. If you google the name this very clock pops up on some antique sites.

One thing to consider also. Almost any true antique (which this appears to be) will actually lose value if it is refinished compared to an identical item even in poor condition that is left completely original. If it has sentimental value and you don't care about the actual monetary value, thats one thing. If you plan on keeping it as a collectible antique, leaving "as-is" might be preferable. Losing the manufacturer's markings on the back would probably diminish the collector value considerably. All that aside, it looks more like a black texture finish to me, rather than a wrinkle.

      Best of luck.

Well, how about that. That clock was made where I was born and grew up. Cool. My Mom and Dad had one very similar to that one. It has a Neon light in it to light the dial and while the second hand turns, it has a big wheel that makes the light flicker and makes it look as if it is rotating. As for the finish, it was a kind of textured finish with very little gloss. I could ask around the area of some of the people I know and see if I could find out something on the clock and the company, if you aren't in a hurry to finish it. If you are going to refinish it, tape off the name of the company on the back.

Jeff That is a good question.

Dan it is more for sentiment.

JT thanks I am in no huge hurry.

            Re: Dad's Clock

This is difficult due to the fact that the coating will depend on the condition of the substrate once it has been stripped. My first responce would be a textured black but I would like to follow this project as you move forward. I would first want to know what the substrate is....please keep me posted on this one for the Sentimental Value is heart warming.

I was leaning towards the texture for the whole thing. The main boby of the clock is metal and is in very good shape. There is some light surface rust that can be seen in the pictures. The band around the two halves of the body might be a stainless and I plan on polishing that as I do the second hand ring. The second hand ring is a lighter material and I will need to take care with it.

So which powder would give me the texture look with a flat or low gloss?

Should I try and clear the ring and Second hand ring?

The face of the clock is in near perfect conditioin so I will just clean it some and be done.

Damn near electrocuted myself check in the thing, plug is cracked and dry rotted, went to pull the plug and it fell apart . Now to find a plug and wire that looks like the original.

              FUN STUFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
