  • We need gun advice !

OK, so we have a small custom job shop and until now we have learned to adapt to the short falls of our current gun (Caswell 50 kv) We are tired of adapting. If budget is not an issue, what gun would you buy? We prefer a cup gun just because most of our jobs are small. I know PBTP sells guns and I am open to both, but I'm looking for honest testimonials. I want my jobs to look professional the first time not the third.

I personally have a Wagner Prima box feeder. I have tried and tested other name brands on the market and have found that even though they coat as well the adjustments are more difficult. They all have their pros and con's. The Wagner is all fields repairable and the parts are not expensive. One scenario is the cascade which is the charging element inside the gun. The average cost is 1200.00 to 1500.00. Wagner cost is 575.00 to 600.00. If you have any other questions relating to powder coating guns please ask. Good luck in your choice.

I have a Gema and really like it. With that said cost wise I would replace it with a Wagner because of parts and service from PBTP. I personally would not recommend a cup gun simply because the job size will grow and you will need more powder capacity. I would personally recommend a fluidized hopper setup with 4-5 hoppers that will hold 3-5 lbs of powder. I have this setup with my gema gun and have one hopper each for Clear, Gloss Black, Red, and one for all other colors. This setup works real well and makes color changes very quick. I like cup guns but they ALL have their drawbacks with consistency and I cant imagine trying to coat some of the items I coat now that require up to 5 lbs of powder per part using a cup gun. If you are serious enough about this to invest in a high end system then plan for the future.

i have an older model from Gema (PG1) with a hopper and i also have a wagner box feed . both are good units the older gema is a bit harder to adjust for someone not too familiar with it .
the wagner is a ready to use out of the box unit , very user friendly .
having only one hopper it has a longer clean up time when changing colors (about 5 minutes more)
but i have better results with the hopper when doing metalics or pearl colors.
i like the box feed because of the fast turnaround time when changing colors
i have not tried any other professional units , but i think that when you upgrade to most any of the prof units you can expect to get prof results the first time (well most of the time anyway )
