King Coat Operations - best practices?

Hi All, so after a while of buying it and wondering whether or not I would like this over the ew pro ... i finally used it - and WOW it is a great gun.

My questions/findings ...

1. it goes through powder FAST! i have the grainger metering valve and I adjusted it full clockwise to shutoff supply, but it still flows powder ... is that normal? shouldnt it be fully closed? what settings do you guys shoot at? got any pics?

2. all my tips for the gun look the same. i remember in a thread someone mentioned using a flat fan tip? is there a picture of this? i have a bunch of tips with the gun, but they all look the same.

3. what is the best way to setup a good ground? i noticed a thread where someone said the ground in the box doesnt go anywhere. should i hook up another wire to that terminal, and connect it to a large metal object?

4. what is power 1 and power 2 for? when i turn it to power 2, you can just hear that high voltage buzz, and the gun just arcs electricity to anything around it.

5. generally, i am getting shocked by this gun - what am i doing wrong?

6. if i tip the nozzle downward, powder just dumps out when im not pulling the trigger, anything to combat this?

7. what other general mods are good? i plan to do the hopper, i remember someone put in an upside down J pickup tube? hows that work? whats it do?
the powder attraction to parts is insane! the gun is definitely worth the money, and i am very happy with it ... it just needs to be fine tuned to shoot a nice cloud, and stop electrocuting me!

i plan to switch to the hopper setup because that tiny cup gun is ... TINY

Best suggestion I have for the King Gun is to buy the hopper retro kit and a hopper form BeeBob.

You will love the gun even more then you did before.

I have the same gun and I never get shocked.The mods I did were to use a hobby cup and to add an air line from the controller to help fluff up the powder.(Do a search for gun modifications) I bought a hopper but have not used it yet as 80% of my jobs are bicycle frames or smaller items with many colour changes.This gun is excellent to clean and goes from black to white with no contamination like hobby guns.

Don't put a lot of powder in the cup at once or it will blow out a big cloud of powder at once.

3. what is the best way to setup a good ground? i noticed a thread where someone said the ground in the box doesnt go anywhere. should i hook up another wire to that terminal, and connect it to a large metal object?Always ground your gun to a good ground source if one is not near put a ground rod in the ground and run a wire from it to where you spray and attach there. Your parts should be grounded also. Don't do anything with the terminal in the box just use the ground clamp.

4. what is power 1 and power 2 for? when i turn it to power 2, you can just hear that high voltage buzz, and the gun just arcs electricity to anything around it. The control box is for more than one gun. The gun you have uses power 1.

5. generally, i am getting shocked by this gun - what am i doing wrong? You are getting shocked I'm guessing because you don't have the gun grounded properly. The voltage will go to the path of least resistance. You!!

6. if i tip the nozzle downward, powder just dumps out when im not pulling the trigger, anything to combat this?This is a unfortunate thing in the gun. The powder exits the cup into the barrel easily. Using the gun you will get adapted to this and it will no longer be an issue.

I have not used the grainger metering valve myself. My initial thought is that you have the pressure set too high.

The tip that is the best all around is the one with the slot. That is the fan tip. I will get a pic up if you do not find the one we are referring to.

The ground in the box connects to the box its self which grounds the system which means it does not need to connect to any thing else.

You will be using power 1 all the time. This same control box is used for most all their systems and the power 2 is for automatic setups and powers the gun all the time bypassing the trigger.

5. generally, i am getting shocked by this gun - what am i doing wrong? Can you give a scenario as to when you are getting shocked? Is the shock coming from the gun its self? Maybe #4 above solved this problem for you??

6. if i tip the nozzle downward, powder just dumps out when im not pulling the trigger, anything to combat this? This is the drawback to a cup gun. They are great for small jobs/parts but as you do more intricate parts you should consider upgrading to a fluidized hopper.

All I can say is "A cup gun is a cup gun" pretty much any mod will be a trade off for some other problem/restriction. This is a great system practice will increase your comfort level with this gun. Just remember you have a lot more power and adjust ability with this gun but max power is not always better. I like to start by taking everything to its lowest setting and adjusting upward to where it sprays best, not trying to start at max power/ pressure and backing down.
