  • Coating Hemi intake manifold...

Got a customer who wants a high rise intake manifold coated in any gloss black finish. The cast is actually not too bad, it's pretty smooth and I'm impressed with it.

The questions is pretty simple. I plan on shooting a second coat of SD Crystal Clear. What should I use for black? Mirror black or bumper black? I have both in hand so I'm just asking what you guys would think is a better choice.

    Thanks!

I say Bumper if your clearing it.

That's what I was thinking, I have been using a lot of Mirror Black but since I'll throw a clear on it, might as well use the Bumper. Thanks!

I would check with PBTP and see which one has the best overbake stability. Those hemi intakes are known for heat issues.

Would something like SD wet black be a better choice?

That's what I was hoping to avoid with the SD clear... might have to give PBTP a call.

PBTP told me that SD only refers to the gloss, not anything to with the powder durability!!!

Ive seen a few guys use the bumper black. What is the difference between wet black and bumper black?

                  That makes absolutely no sense.

                    Re: Coating Hemi intake manifold...

I think what she meant is that Super Durable resins/powders have 3 times the amount of salt spray results and have better quality colorants/dyes used in the formulation. Super durable products will last a lot longer than regular polyesters/polyurethanes in harsh weather, sun light, outdoor applications. The super durable resin is a very clean high gloss resin and by mixing top quality colorants with these resins, they will hold up much longer than regular resins like the mirror black or bumper black. Super Durable has nothing to do with its actual impact resistance or pencil hardness. Most super durables will have very good impact resistance, however they tend to be just as strong as a standard powder. Most of the time additives are used to make the impact resistance greater. Our products range from 120 -160 impact resistance and that is a standard all around. It really only makes a difference when getting into 300 impact resistance, which you are limited to colors/minimum quantities. Reds might have lower impact resistance then blacks but the range of difference is on a small scale and this shouldn't be worried about.

so it is more durable, like the name implies
