  • So I killed my oven tonight

Long story short I blew out one of the two temp controllers on my double oven tonight, oops. I need advice what to do...

Can I use one of those PID controllers I've seen posted? If so what does all the mumbo jumbo in its description really mean? I'll get a new K type thermocouple, and It looks like I can use all the same wires I have already, just need to wire up a fuse for the power source?

I'm electrically retarded, so thats working against me. Its just magic, I don't get it no matter how many times or ways its explained to me.

Of course I have customer work sitting on the bench awaiting PC'ng

    Thanks as always.

I would suggest talking to Ted over at Ted's Fabrication. The man is a genius and extremely helpful. One of the good guys for sure. I actually just finished wiring my new PID less than 20 minutes ago, all with Ted's help. He may at least be able to send you in the right direction. Good luck!

Yes, you can wire a PID to control a standard oven. It is a little involved, so if you aren't electrically inclined, I would suggest having someone who is do it for you. There's a couple ways to do it, but the easiest way is to add in a PID controlled contactor and completely bypass the regular oven controls. I'm currently in SLC, Utah, or I would post up pics and a schematic of how to do that. I can do that when I get home, though, if anyone else is interested.

Thats what I was hoping to do. Completley eliminate the factory oven controls. I should be able to use all the wires, elements, just add a power source/fuse box.

Post up pics when you can, It will be a few days before I get the the PID unit anyways.

        Thanks!

Let me know if I can be of any help. I have switched my kitchen oven to a pid and contractor setup as well.

Putting a P I D controller in your oven is really easy. It takes six wires to wire the controller up. I use solid state relays they work great no moving parts to wear out. You can find all your parts on ebay for cheap.
              1 - 110v hot line in
              1 - neutral line in
1 - dc line out to your relay
1 - neutral line out to your relay
2- and the wires for your thermal coupler

Well, I've ended up staying in SLC a lot longer then expected. I will be back next week before wendsday, so I'll post that info up when I get home.

I found a lot of good info on Caswell's site. So It will be wired up tomorrow if all goes well. My uncle is a retired circuit board/electronic repair guy, so he understands all the wiring stuff and will do it for me.
