  • Help with Chrome exhaust tips

Just picked up two sample pieces (shown in Photo). The shop does a lot of custome exhaust work. The idea is to put these two pieces on display and for the shop to offer it as a service.
They are new chromed turn downs. Not much to be done in the way of cleaning. Probably just flush with acetone and coat.
The shop has suggested to do one in white and the other in black.

    Now the questions;
How much damage will welding the piece do?
What would be your best reccomendation as far as powder?
Would you add a clear over it?
Anything to look out for as far as coating and curing?
And most of all what would you charge to be tacked on to the price for the coating?

Thanks, and of course all of this is need yesterday.

Welding will definitely burn the powder off even if you use hi-temp, which I wouldn't in this case. Any good exterior TGIC polyester should hold up fine (except where its welded ). Clear if you want extra durability. Primer basecoat wouldn't be a bad idea either to prevent corrosion. On new pipes like that, you should have no problem giving them a light scuffing with scotchbrite, clean with prep solvent, and coat. (Candies would look sweet over the chrome, but don't scuff first - scratches will show). I'd probably charge about $15 each for a single coat. An additional 50% for adding clear or doing a 2-stage basecoat/topcoat color. Anyone else?

I really can't see how you can weld these without damaging the powder. Best bet would be to leave at least an inch between the powder and the weld, just a guess.

I would say $25-$30 is a reasonable amount for a set of two.

        Thanks guys for the replies.
I would prefer to put some trans. color on them but he did tell me most of what he has seen them go on was either black or white. Given that and they are his pipes I kinda have to go with the B/W. Going to try the Wet black and Gloss white.

Would adding clear over either of these improve the looks?

I think also I should as suggested tape off an inch at the end so the welding can be done. That should look OK since that end will not be see any way.

Would a light blast be better than scottbrite or over kill?

That's what I would do just because I find it easier to throw it in the cabinet and go over it lightly for about a minute. Stuff like this I usually set the pressure at 8 and shoot from 8 inches away from the part at a slow pace.

Also, after the blasting and masking I would increase my price to $40.

              Sounds like a plan.
I will keep the price at 25 a piece. Think that is reasonable for no more than I am doing.
If I had to actually blast them clean I would go up.

              Thanks again,

Do the welding first............get an 8" or 10" length of exhaust pipe, have a muffler shop enlarge one end and slit it, weld the other end to the chrome tips then p/c your heart out. Then it's just a matter of assembly like any other exhaust component with muffler clamps.
