  • Primer question

I just join the forum and I am just getting started in powder coating for the public. Been coating for myself/ friends and decide to take it one step farther.

I first job will be a motorcyle frame that races on dirt. The customer boot hill's rubs on the side of his frame and rubs off the powder coat. Will primer help this? Does powder coat rub off or is it just plain paint? I have a hard time believing it's powder coat but he swears by it. I have not seen the frame to know for sure. Coating will be a Mirror Black.

    Thanks for any help
    Mike

    Re: Primer question

Go for the Mirror Clearcoat for overall protection for the powder.

For added protection, and Im sure he cant rub it off, shoot a acrylic clear over the black.

The only thing that will stop the boot wear on the frame is frame guards, trust me. I wore a hole in my carbon fiber frame guards, had severe wear on the alum. ones before that. Powder coat, no matter what kind or how much aint stoppin' it, Sorry.

            Re: Primer question

A few races or riding sessions in the mud and it will wear through to the metal - no matter how much of whatever you put on it.

It's like sanding the spot down with 220 grit - it's just a matter of time!

              Re: Primer question

I agree those wear areas will be rubbed off over time. I would suggest to the customer to coat those heavy wear areas with something like the rubberized bed liner after you powder coat it. That should give some added protection.

I have used skateboard grip tape on these areas . but it will wear through the tape in time.
