Is sand blasting the norm when powder coating? I know I have to blast if rusted, paint and such, but I wonder if something is new like steel, aluminum and do you sand blast after you dip your product everytime?
I know that I blast before i paint, but does powder work the same?

Stupid question I know, but i want it right the first time.

the only stupid question is the question not asked!

but i blast everything . especially new steel . you need to give it a profile something the powder can adhere to . moly tubing is the worst...its just like a paint job . you can spend alot of money for the best paints but it aint gonna do squat if the base is properly prepaired .

We also blast EVERYTHING. New or old, even if it looks clean, we shoot it with 70-80 grit glass beads to give the entire surface a consistent texture the powder can adhere to. Seems to be working well so far...

Dip is refered to soaking in a chemical to remover paint, powder coat, oils.

Would you glass bead aluminum before coating?

        Thanks Guys

I do. Usually a light blasting, certainly not as hard as steel parts, but it gets blasted as well.

My idea has always that if it can coated and cured, it can withstand blasting to a certain degree, seems to do the trick so far.

We always blast our parts. Normally with 80grit Aluminum Oxide.

Here's a related question. What kind of blasting cabinet are you guys using? Siphon pick-up tube or a pressurized pot?

It's like you read my mind Jeff! That's actually why I'm starting to look into better blasting alternatives. At what point does a blasting cabinet just become a hassle over simply building a blasting room? I have yet to tackle a job big enough to require a larger cabinet or a blast room, but I want to keep an eye on the future based on what makes more sense.

I think having a big cabinet is always handy for most custom jobs, just trying to consider my options.

Thats cool!! It is a popular model. I got mine from summit Racing they were the cheapest. I have added a shop vac with a special filter for a dust collector. And I put better and longer hoses inside it.

I use the same one too, but ditched the siphon gun and fed the hose from my pressure pot into the cabinet. I have to dump the media back into the pot every 15 minutes or so, but I can get a lot done with it in that time. I wish my cabinet was a big double one like Harleydad's though...even though I would only need something that big about 5% of the time. I just outsource the big stuff. WAY faster.

What's the outsource's hourly rate? What do you normally pay for something like a set of 17-18 inch wheels in OEM paint?
