  • Off gassing wheels from hell....

So I did those wheels yesterday in Silver Explosion then Candy Green without any off gassing issues. Today I'm doing a similar set of wheels in Mirror Black and it's off-gassing like crazy.

I had them in the oven for over an hour at 450 degrees during off gassing, pulled them out, shot them, and now there are craters everywhere. Besides that, the wheel is perfect. Tried to shoot a second LIGHT coat and still no better. What can I do?

At this point I'm out of powder. I also wanted to shoot a clear coat on them (SD Crytal) think this will help any? If not then what should I do? Sand them down smooth and shoot again when I have new powder?

Aaarrg! I HATE off gassing problems. I don't run into them often, but when I do, it's all over the place.

Anyone? Should I be able to just sand these down smooth using the powder as a sort of primer, then shoot another coat of black? I've done this before on a couple of smaller parts but I want to make sure it will be OK on these off-gassing wheels before I go tearing into them.

They got to around 425-435, and it took about 30 minutes. They were in there between 5PM and 7PM, so I thought they had off-gassed enough.

I cured it at 400F like the catalog mentions. It's just small craters (going in) all over the place, especially on the flat (dense) areas that are the spokes.

I don't think its out gassing myself. I have that same issue every time I shoot mirror black. Its way too finicky. Takes me at least two trys too get it right. I would get some bumper black and try it. I'm over mirror black.

Same here! I'm not messing around with mirror black anymore. Bumper black looks just as nice after SD Crystal Clear and it's overbake stable. So I'm wondering, can I wet sand this mirror black smooth and shoot bumper black over it?

                BUMPER BLACK ROCKS!

Wish I could contribute to your thread, but I am still new to this. But I have to say that bumper black is amazing and has such a great reflective effect from the surprising high gloss. Definitely better than mirror black IMO.

In my experience you can, but it always looks "thick" to me when coating over something w/ a black. I can get it to look OK, but not perfect. I would get it back to bare and re coat it. Good Luck
