• Need Help

I powdered this valve cover today and I did it in ultimate chrome and black chrome 2, half and half. The ultimate looks pretty good but after it cured and cooled down I foiled and taped half off and sprayed the black chrome 2. That came out almost looking like a vein. Why O why does it look like a vein color?100_1868.jpg[/attachment:17iwkrnk]100_1867.jpg[/attachment:17iwkrnk]100_1866.jpg[/attachment:17iwkrnk]100_1865.jpg[/attachment:17iwkrnk]100_1864.jpg[/attachment:17iwkrnk]

My guess would be your just a little light on the Black chrome coverage.

I agree, it looks like it could be a little thin on the black chrome coverage. The ultimate chrome has very good over bake protection, so always make sure you completely cure it.

Thanks for the info I actually thought I might of put too much, but I am far from expert status. I'll try again to see what happens.

Did you do the whole vc in ultimate chrome and tape off 1/2 for the black chrome or 1/2 ult chrome and 1/2 black chrome? Looking closer, both look like they were shot a little too thin. Look at the mounting hole areas and the edges. There's a distinct color showing through both colors equally, like a copper base before the chroming process. It might be the vein look is the chrome base showing through the too thin black chrome. The ult chrome ( also too thin ) is closer to the base color so it didn't show the vein look as much?? Or could this be an optical illusion?

I was thinking the ultimate chrome isnt quite as shiny as i thought it should be? The black chrome definetly looks like too little coverage.

              Re: Need Help

I did the whole vc in ultimate chrome then taped off half and put on the black chrome 2. I will redo it on Sunday. I always read on here how people put powder on too thick and without a mill gage I just put enough to cover. Do I have to do over or can I put another coat of black chrome 2?

If the Patented Ultimate Chrome was not shiny enough I do not think you cured it out all the way..therefore you may have crosslinked the Black Chrome II with the basecoat... The Patented Ultimate Chrome is Overbake stable so if you leave her in the oven a little longer than you estimate your bake cycle this will not hurt the product or your finish and ensures that the gloss comes all the way out...Lay her down thin at the recommended mil thickness which is 1.8-2.0 mils no more....

It"WAS cured" all the way or "NOT cured" all the way out?

As long as both are all cured you'll be fine to coat over and begin again. Just make sure you cure each step. If you are uncertain about what you have on there now just run it through another cure cycle then start coating anew. I don't have a thickness gauge either, I use a LED flashlight to check for a good and even coverage.
