Some plastics you can, some you can't. I would only try it if spare replacements are available. Put one in your oven, heat to 200 f and keep increasing the temp 25 degrees at a time and see if it holds up as you raise it to your powder's cure temp. If it doesn't melt into a blob, you're good to go. Try to use a low-cure-temp powder if possible, or just cure at a lower temp for longer. PBTP can furnish you with tables for longer cure times at lower temps for their powders. You will have to pre-heat it for the powder to stick (hot-flock).

I have coated plastic before, its a tricky process. And i know for a fact I dont get a full cure but the flow out does happen, and the stuff still comes out good I coated my brothers welding helmet in a gunmetal, gloss black fade with clear to equal it all out.

Yes you can PC plastic, MDF & wood. Unfortunately, you cant. How do they do it in industry?
You require a Ultra Violet (UV) curing powder:
          1) apply powder.
          2) use infra red heat 1-2 mins to obtain melt and flow of powder (max temp 95-100C).
          3) UV light (special wavelength tubes) for 8-15 secs.
          Done.

JTSmith did the plastic centers on his stock Mountaineer wheels. I believe he said they had a thin metal coating on the plastic centers. Hopefully he'll chime in or you could search for him.

Re: can you powder coat plastic alloy wheel centre caps

I haven't used it, but you will need to know the melting temp of the plastic you're dealing with, and the minimum cure temp of the powder you're using. Even when using the L2P, you need to cure the powder normally after it has dried. That would probably require a phone call to the mfgr. or they should be able to get you the info on extended cure times for PBTP powders here if you call. I don't think they monitor the forum any more. Most plastic parts are stamped with a code that tells you the composition. You can google that stamping to find out the melting temp. For example, PPE + PA6 will deform at about 395 f (about 201 c) and melts at a bit higher. If you cure the powder at 380 f (193 c), it works fine. You just have to cure a bit longer than if you were at the normal 400 f (204 c) many powders recommend. Hope this helps.

                  Best of luck.

Uh, Matt and Shelly are no longer around here. They've both moved on to bigger and better things. Not to mention that NOBODY from the "company" is paying attention to the forum - we are on our own now. See the "Forum Changes" thread at the top of every page
